The history of the Monza circuit
TheMonza rac etrack was opened in 1922: it is the fourth oldest circuit in the world and the first in Europe among those still in operation, considering that the one at Brooklands, England, is no longer in use and the two oldest tracks in the world are located in the United States (the Milwaukee and Indianapolis circuits).
Since its establishment in 1950 – and with the sole exception of 1980, when the Imola circuit was preferred – the Monza racetrack has always hosted the Italian Grand Prix: with its 71 GPs held, Monza is the circuit that boasts the largest number of Formula 1 GPs held.
In addition, we are also talking about the fastest circuit in the circus and the one where the highest peak average dry lap speed was touched: the record was set by Lewis Hamilton, who, during the 2020 qualifying session, completed a lap while maintaining an average lap speed of over 264 km/h.
