In July 1996, Engineer De Tomaso legitimately requested the return of the cars and engines from the Museum Collection. Maserati accepted the request, but purchased part of the Collection consisting of 15 engines, which then remained on display within the Modena Company, while the Collection of 19 cars, on De Tomaso’s recommendation, left for England to be sold at auction in London. Sale organized by the Brooks auction house and scheduled for December 2, 1996.
The news of the sale of the cars, which would have caused the total dispersion of a historical heritage fundamental to the city of Modena, put enthusiasts and authorities on alert, and on October 18, 1996, the alarm was raised.
The problem was exposed to the Panini family, and Umberto Panini took immediate action to avert the dispersion of the historic Maserati cars. Thanks, then, to the intervention of the Panini family, shortly before the fateful date, the Brooks auction house announced that the Maserati Collection was being withdrawn from the auction to return to its city of origin, housed in the premises owned by the Panini family.
